A recent UN report has accused Israel of deliberately targeting Palestinian children in Gaza, alleging acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes during the conflict in the region. The investigation conducted by the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry revealed that 30% of the casualties in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began were children. The report condemned Israeli forces for intentionally causing death and severe harm to hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children.
Despite the increasing number of child casualties, the report highlighted that Israeli forces persisted in using heavy munitions and weapons in densely populated areas during the conflict. According to the three-member investigative team, these attacks, resulting in a significant number of child fatalities, were deemed deliberate.
Furthermore, the report pointed out that Israeli assaults on Gaza’s hospitals had severely disrupted children’s access to life-saving medical care, jeopardizing their survival as a vulnerable group. The commission had previously accused Israel of committing genocide during the Gaza conflict, a claim vehemently denied by Israel. In the follow-up report released on Tuesday, the commission emphasized that Israeli military actions continued, leading to unprecedented death, injury, and trauma among Palestinian children.
The commission’s chairman, Srinivasan Muralidhar, expressed concern over the ongoing violence affecting children, stressing that despite ceasefires, Palestinian children continued to suffer. He emphasized that the damage inflicted on their health, education, and development was irreversible. Muralidhar underscored the importance of protecting Palestinian children’s rights and their future self-determination.
In response to the report’s findings, Israel faced criticism, with the commission asserting that Israeli security forces had deliberately targeted and killed Palestinian children. The report also highlighted instances of Palestinian children being mistreated in Israeli prisons and detention facilities, including incidents of sexual and gender-based violence. Israel’s mission in Geneva dismissed the report as defamatory and accused Hamas of employing tactics that endangered civilians.
The report shed light on the impact of retaliatory actions following attacks from Gaza, resulting in a significant number of casualties. The commission reiterated its stance that Israeli authorities and security forces had knowingly targeted Palestinian children, leading to severe consequences in Gaza and the West Bank. The report emphasized the devastating effects on children, including physical and mental injuries, trauma, displacement, and the collapse of essential services.
The commission’s report was released shortly after UNICEF disclosed that numerous children had been killed or injured in Gaza following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The report serves as a reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, particularly the detrimental impact on Palestinian children.
