A toddler with 21 broken bones was allegedly murdered and sexually assaulted by a mother and her new partner, according to court proceedings. Isabelle Welsh, aged two, tragically passed away after collapsing at her residence in Thornaby, Teesside, following severe injuries. Alexandra Walker, 25, and Harrison Simpson, 22, are facing charges of murder, child cruelty, sexual assault, and allowing the death of a child at Teesside Crown Court.
The couple, who began their relationship last summer, were described as spending significant time with the young girl. On September 13, emergency services were called to the house where they found Isabelle unconscious at the bottom of the stairs, covered in bruises and blood. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Prosecutors alleged that Isabelle had been subjected to severe abuse over a prolonged period, resulting in multiple fractures and extensive bruising. Walker reportedly delayed seeking medical help for her daughter, even when she was critically ill. The prosecution argued that both defendants were fully aware of the child’s deteriorating health but failed to act to protect themselves.
The court heard that the couple’s relationship was characterized by substance abuse and neglect, leading to a decline in Isabelle’s well-being and exposure to violence. Surveillance footage from cameras at Walker’s residence was presented as evidence. Additionally, text messages revealed Walker’s role as the primary caregiver for her daughter and her academic pursuits.
The trial is ongoing to determine the extent of the defendants’ involvement in the tragic events.
