Ferrari has been fined £25,512 following an incident where Lewis Hamilton accidentally struck a crew member with his car during a pit lane mishap at the Belgian Grand Prix. The incident occurred when Hamilton, after being given the green light to exit the pit stop at Spa-Francorchamps, unknowingly hit a mechanic who was adjusting his front wing.
Although the crew member was fortunate to escape serious injury, Hamilton expressed remorse over the incident, citing a similar accident involving Kimi Raikkonen in Bahrain. Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 champion, immediately checked on the mechanic via team radio and halted his car upon realizing the situation.
In response to the incident, Ferrari received a substantial fine from the FIA. The governing body issued a statement outlining the penalty, with a portion of the fine being suspended subject to certain conditions, including submitting a report detailing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Hamilton, who finished fourth in the race, expressed his concern for the mechanic’s safety and acknowledged the team’s responsibility in the matter. Ferrari admitted fault for the unsafe release of the car and pledged to review their pit stop procedures to prevent similar occurrences.
Kimi Antonelli emerged victorious in the Belgian Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen securing podium finishes. Hamilton currently holds the second position in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing Antonelli by 45 points.
