An 11-year-old girl tragically lost her life when her hair got entangled in the suction pipe of a swimming pool, as shown in recent images.
Alice Ferrari, who was vacationing with her family in Sestri Levante, Italy, was involved in a fatal incident at a lido on July 15. Seeking refuge from the scorching temperatures, Alice entered a shallow indoor pool but was pulled underwater after her hair got caught in a suction nozzle. Another child noticed her absence and raised the alarm.
Daniele Muzio, the co-manager of the lido, promptly intervened by cutting Alice’s hair with scissors to release her from the pool’s filtration system. Despite receiving CPR for 45 minutes, Alice remained unconscious and was airlifted to Gaslini Children’s Hospital in Genoa, where she sadly passed away on Friday.
Authorities are now probing whether safety protocols were adhered to, particularly the requirement for children under 12 to be supervised by an adult in swimming pools. Initial findings suggest that the lido may have neglected to display the mandatory sign informing visitors of this rule.
Muzio and Anna Copello, his mother and co-manager of the Bagni Segesta lido, are currently under scrutiny regarding Alice’s tragic death. The small pool, approximately one meter deep, has been confiscated for safety assessments.
In response to this incident, Italy’s Ministers for Civil Protection and Health have collaborated on a legislation proposal to enforce stricter safety measures at pools to prevent similar tragedies. The government emphasizes the importance of supervision and caution to avoid leaving children unattended in water.
Alice, a resident of Suisio, was an avid equestrian enthusiast who started horse riding at the age of six. She trained at the Isola Equestrian Centre in Bergamo and was recognized by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation as a promising young rider with a bright future.
Her parents have chosen to donate her organs, with the organ retrieval process scheduled following a post-mortem examination on July 21.
