A man has tragically passed away following an attack by a dog on a rural property in Australia. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at Coonabarabran, situated approximately 350km northwest of Newcastle, after receiving reports of the incident on Sunday, July 12.
Upon reaching Timor Road, authorities discovered the 55-year-old property owner suffering from severe injuries. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Law enforcement officers were compelled to euthanize the dog involved in the attack, characterized as medium to large in size with an unknown breed. A coroner’s report is now in the process of being prepared.
In response to the incident, the council expressed condolences to those impacted but refrained from commenting further due to the ongoing police investigation. This tragic event follows a prior call by Warrumbungle Shire Council for residents to report aggressive dog behavior, citing an average of one dog attack per month in the shire with a population of under 10,000.
Earlier this year, the council had emphasized the importance of dog owners taking responsibility for their pets to safeguard the community. They highlighted instances where dogs had roamed freely or escaped from their owners, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of situations when dogs are unsupervised or stressed.
