“UK Study: Disadvantaged Areas at Higher Risk of Burglary”

Residents in disadvantaged areas of the UK are more vulnerable to burglary compared to those in affluent neighborhoods, as per recent research findings. Home Office data indicates a decrease in residential burglaries, with 154,000 incidents in 2025, marking an 11% drop from the previous year and a 20% decline from 2022. Only 5% of these cases led to charges, while 7% are still being investigated.

Charge rates varied across regions, with South Wales having the highest rate at 12% and Hertfordshire the lowest at 2%. While major cities like Birmingham and Leeds reported the highest total number of burglaries, when adjusted for population size, Middlesbrough had the highest burglary rate, recording 863 incidents in 2025, equivalent to 14 break-ins per 1,000 households.

Middlesbrough, known for high deprivation levels, ranked second in England for deprivation, following Blackpool. Bradford followed with 13 burglaries per 1,000 households, ranking 12th in deprivation among English council areas.

Several northern cities, including Kingston upon Hull, Leeds, and Burnley, along with Birmingham and London areas such as Westminster, Camden, and Southwark, reported around 12 burglaries per 1,000 households. Conversely, rural communities like North Norfolk, Breckland, and Eden in Cumbria had the lowest rates at just two burglaries per 1,000 households.

The analysis defines residential burglary as unauthorized entry into inhabited buildings with the intent to steal, encompassing homes, sheds, and garages. Urban areas continue to experience higher burglary rates, while rural communities may benefit from isolation and community initiatives like Neighbourhood Watch programs.

Despite the overall decline in burglaries, ensuring home security remains crucial across all areas to deter potential intruders.
