A mishap involving paramedics and a defibrillator has left a TV producer, Meg Fozzard, with permanent disabilities. This incident occurred during a cardiac arrest episode in April 2019 at her home in Walworth, South London when Meg, then 26 years old, collapsed and experienced breathing difficulties.
The delay in administering a crucial electric shock, due to errors in operating the defibrillator, resulted in Meg’s brain being deprived of oxygen for eight critical minutes. Consequently, she now faces speech challenges, fatigue, and mobility issues, relying on a wheelchair for movement. Legal action ensued, leading to Meg receiving an undisclosed settlement from the NHS.
Despite the defibrillator indicating the need for an immediate shock, paramedics faced setbacks such as using incorrect equipment and pressing the wrong button on the LifePak device, causing further delays in treatment. The London Ambulance Service acknowledged the eight-minute delay in providing the necessary electric shock to Meg’s heart.
Following the incident, Meg’s life took a significant turn as she coped with a brain injury resulting from the cardiac arrest. Her partner, Xander Font Freide, recalls the distressing moments leading up to Meg’s hospitalization and subsequent struggles with her recovery. Despite the challenges, compensation facilitated Meg’s access to various therapies, aiding her progress in speech, mobility, and cognitive functions.
Now 33, Meg reflects on her journey to recovery, expressing gratitude for the support received and her gradual return to normalcy. However, she emphasizes the importance of improving patient safety to prevent similar incidents in the future. The London Ambulance Service has issued an apology for the lapses in Meg’s care, highlighting the implementation of changes to prevent such errors in the future.
