“British Airways Urges Customers: Use Avios Before Changes!”

British Airways is advising its customers to utilize their Avios points for booking reward flights before the program undergoes changes on May 27.

Avios serves as the loyalty program for over 30 major airlines, including British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, enabling users to accumulate points for flight redemptions, albeit with additional taxes and fees.

Starting May 27, the cash contribution required for a British Airways reward flight will increase, as highlighted by MoneySavingExpert.com. While the points needed will remain constant, the monetary outlay will go up.

MoneySavingExpert.com has provided examples of the forthcoming cost increases. For instance, a round-trip business flight from London to New York will see the price escalate from 176,000 Avios plus £399 to £499, marking a £100 rise.

Similarly, shorter routes will experience a modest uptick. Currently, a one-way economy flight from London to Amsterdam costs 10,000 Avios plus £1, but this will elevate to £2.50.

The recent adjustments will impact existing bookings if modifications are made post-May 27. However, reservations not requiring alterations will remain unaffected.

To maximize Avios points accumulation, individuals can earn points through various means like flight bookings, car rentals, hotel stays, or shopping via the British Airways Executive Club website.

It is advisable, as suggested by MSE, for travelers to compare flight options with other carriers for potential cost savings before utilizing Avios points.

British Airways has stated on their website that beginning May 27, 2026, the prices for Reward Flights will rise, affecting only the cash component of bookings. Existing bookings made prior to this change will remain at the current pricing level.
