“Boy, 11, Survives Shark Attack: Leg Amputated”

An 11-year-old boy had to undergo surgery to have his left leg amputated following a shark attack off the coast of Jaboatao dos Guararapes near Recife, Brazil. The incident occurred yesterday, and the boy’s uncle, Aldemir Jose, recounted the harrowing experience of rescuing his nephew from the water after hearing a distressing noise and seeing blood.

The uncle described how he rushed into the water to save his conscious nephew, who pleaded not to let him die. A nurse provided immediate care at the scene before emergency responders transported the boy to a nearby hospital. Reports indicated that the shark had bitten the child in the left hand and hip, leading to the amputation of his leg.

The attack took place at Praia da Piedade, known as Piedade Beach, which is labeled as a “Shark Zone” with warning signs for swimmers. Danise Alves from the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents highlighted the restricted bathing areas due to potential shark attacks in the region.

This incident marks the third shark attack this year in Pernambuco, with a history of 83 recorded shark attacks and 27 fatalities in the past 34 years. The state authorities continue to monitor and manage the situation to ensure the safety of beachgoers in the area.
