Several theme parks are set to close down due to poor performance in their recent seasons, with a popular UK park among them.
One of the affected parks, Brean Theme Park in Somerset, entered liquidation earlier this year, marking the beginning of closures for several parks.
In the US, Glenwood Caverns in Colorado filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February following financial and reputational challenges in previous years.
Six Flags, a major theme park operator, announced the closure of six “underperforming” locations within its amusement and waterpark portfolio for 2026, following a significant loss exceeding $1.2 billion in 2025.
Another long-standing amusement park is bidding farewell in 2026. The Wild Waves Theme and Water Park in Washington State has commenced its final operating season, closing its doors after almost 50 years due to escalating operational expenses.
Premier Parks, the park’s operator, expressed gratitude to guests, staff, and the Federal Way community for their support over the years. Despite efforts to manage costs after the COVID shutdown, the park faced substantial losses, leading to its closure at the end of the 2026 season.
Throughout its final season, which began on May 23 and ends on November 1, all 30 rides and water slides will remain operational, honoring season passes and packages purchased before the closure announcement.
The park plans to celebrate its legacy with themed events and special promotions in its last year of operation. However, the proposed replacement of the amusement park with a one-million-square-foot warehouse has sparked discontent among locals nostalgic for the theme park.
Previous development ideas for the site, such as a hotel and convention center, have been reconsidered by local stakeholders and city officials. The park’s co-owner, Jeff Stock, emphasized the importance of a respectful transition and community benefits in planning the future project.
While the proposed plans are in early stages, they aim to bring lasting advantages to the city and its surroundings, with further details to be disclosed as the project progresses through planning and community reviews.
