A 13-year-old boy in Italy has passed away nearly a decade after consuming contaminated cheese that left him in a vegetative state.
Mattia Maestri ingested raw-milk cheese tainted with E.coli bacteria in June 2017 in the northern region of the country.
Following the tragic incident, the boy’s family has been engaged in a legal battle against the responsible parties, including the cheese factory and healthcare providers involved in his treatment.
His father, Giovanni Battista Maestri, announced the heartbreaking news of his son’s passing, expressing gratitude for the support received during this difficult time.
Mattia was only four years old when he consumed ‘Due Laghi’ cheese, produced from raw milk by the Coredo cheese dairy in the Non Valley in Trentino.
His father alleges that errors in the milk collection process led to the contamination that resulted in Mattia developing hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe condition associated with E.coli infection.
The syndrome can lead to the formation of blood clots and hinder blood circulation to vital organs, such as the brain.
Subsequently, Mattia entered an irreversible vegetative state, requiring numerous medications, experiencing frequent epileptic seizures, and losing his eyesight.
After a prolonged legal dispute, two individuals from the dairy were convicted of causing serious physical harm to Mattia.
Since his son’s illness, Giovanni established a consumer group and authored a book cautioning parents about the risks associated with unpasteurized dairy products.
The book was presented to the Italian parliament with Giovanni emphasizing its potential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The family’s legal representatives have filed a complaint alleging aggravated negligent homicide, highlighting the prolonged suffering endured by Mattia and his parents.
Reflecting on his son’s condition, Giovanni recounted the challenges faced during Mattia’s medical care and rehabilitation.
Mattia’s funeral was held in Coredo, where a gathering of mourners paid their respects to the young boy.
Father Raymond Marcieca described Mattia’s journey as a profound trial, praising his innocence and eternal legacy.
During the funeral, teachers honored Mattia’s memory, underscoring the value of life and the lasting impact he had on their school community.</p
