A 35-year-old man has been brought before a court on a murder charge in connection with the death of a nine-year-old girl who was discovered injured in Arbroath.
The girl, Minnie Merriman, was found at the Elliot industrial estate in the town of Angus while her family was camping nearby. She was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Christopher Rice, a 35-year-old from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and was formally accused of murder. He did not enter a plea and has been remanded in custody for further examination.
Rice is scheduled to return to court within the next eight days. Authorities have revealed that Minnie and the accused were acquainted with each other.
In a statement relayed by Police Scotland, Minnie’s family expressed their profound grief over her passing, describing her as incredible, beautiful, and courageous. They have asked for privacy during this difficult period.
It is reported that Minnie was camping with her family at the time of the incident, and the police are providing support to the family through specialized officers.
Detective Inspector Mike Ness, leading the investigation, extended sympathies to all affected by the tragedy, particularly Minnie’s family. Police presence will be maintained in the area as inquiries progress.
