UK Pledges Support to Ukraine with Two-Year Energy Deal

The UK has pledged support to Ukrainian families affected by Russian assaults on critical power infrastructure through a significant two-year energy agreement. Keir Starmer has revealed the UK’s commitment to supplying power to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities for the next two years to ensure electricity access, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to safeguarding Ukraine during challenging times.

During the G7 summit in Evian, France, Starmer announced a £210 million support initiative aimed at aiding Ukraine. He will urge global leaders to take additional measures to secure peace in Ukraine. Simultaneously, Downing Street is set to unveil a new sanctions package targeting Russia’s illicit shadow fleet, with a focus on vessels transporting Russian Liquid Natural Gas.

In a groundbreaking operation, British forces intercepted a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the Channel for the first time. This fleet, known as the “ghost fleet,” conceals its identity to circumvent Western sanctions and plays a crucial role in funding Vladimir Putin’s military operations. The vessels not only pose environmental risks but also threaten critical undersea cables.

Starmer aims to rebuild his defense reputation at the G7 summit following the resignation of John Healey as Defence Secretary due to inadequate military funding. The UK government is prioritizing lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine in its long-delayed Defense Investment Plan.

The escalating defense spending dispute may lead to challenging discussions for Starmer with world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, at the G7 summit. The UK reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine and combating Russian aggression, emphasizing the importance of standing together against threats to European security.

The new energy agreement, finalized during a meeting between the UK PM and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, will provide enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power producer Energoatom through UK Export Finance. This support is crucial as Energoatom supplies over half of Ukraine’s electricity needs.
