“Russian Shadow Fleet Captain Arrested in UK Sanctions Violation”

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has announced that a Russian shadow fleet vessel’s captain was arrested by British troops for violating sanctions. Ajay Pant, a 38-year-old Indian national, faces charges under the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 for allegedly transporting prohibited oil from Russia to another country in June 2026.

The tanker Smyrtos was seized in the Channel by Royal Marine commandos and NCA officers in the UK’s first operation to capture a sanctioned vessel. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander issued an order preventing the ship from leaving UK waters.

Ajay Pant is set to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday while the 24 crew members, hailing from Georgia and India, remain on the anchored vessel off Weymouth in Dorset. If convicted, Pant could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or both under the 2019 regulations.

Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis stated that the UK’s interception of the vessel is a significant setback for Putin and emphasized the UK’s commitment to enforcing sanctions. The operation is part of the UK’s actions against Russian shadow fleet vessels, with around 200 vessels forced to anchor due to UK-led initiatives. Jarvis highlighted the message sent to Russia that the UK and its allies will act against Russian military activities.

During the announcement, Jarvis was accompanied by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who he praised for her dedication to national security.
