A police sergeant, Paul Street, is currently facing trial at the Old Bailey for various alleged offenses during his time at Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Street, described as a “maverick” officer, reportedly created a toxic work environment within his team through WhatsApp communications.
Street was in charge of a team at Cambourne Police Station focused on combating county lines drug supply and organized crime in 2021. Although his aggressive approach yielded positive outcomes in tackling serious crime, anti-corruption investigators intervened in 2021, seizing Street’s phones and uncovering incriminating WhatsApp group discussions.
According to the prosecution, Street fostered a culture of boasting and disrespect towards suspects, displaying zero tolerance for dissent within his team. The court heard that Street established two WhatsApp groups: Impact Team in 2018, involving 17 colleagues, and later Inner Circle, which contained derogatory remarks about fellow officers.
Allegations against Street include assaulting a suspect, Samuel Kayode, in 2020, taking a photo of the injured individual, and sharing it in the group chat. Street purportedly showed a pattern of inappropriate behavior, including derogatory comments towards suspects and encouraging aggressive actions by team members.
Furthermore, Street was accused of requesting explicit content from a female suspect’s phone, with a colleague sharing intimate photos with him. The prosecutor highlighted that Street’s conduct was unprofessional, emphasizing that he disregarded ethical boundaries and misused his authority.
Despite Street’s defense claiming self-defense and good intentions, the prosecutor argued that his actions were unacceptable and undermined public trust in law enforcement. The trial at the Old Bailey is ongoing, with Street facing charges of assault, perverting the course of justice, and misconduct in public office.
The prosecution emphasized that Street’s behavior was not in line with professional standards and that his actions mirrored those of the criminals he was supposed to combat. Street, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, has denied the charges brought against him, and the legal proceedings continue at the Old Bailey.
