Two prominent American commentators known for expressing strong anti-Israel sentiments have been barred from entering the United Kingdom.
Cenk Uygur, host of the online talk show Young Turks, and his nephew, streamer Hasan Piker, disclosed that their travel authorization to attend SXSW London had been revoked. Uygur further stated he was also prohibited from speaking at an event at Oxford University.
Piker previously caused controversy by suggesting that America “deserved 9/11,” a remark he later apologized for in 2019. Additionally, he has asserted that Hamas is superior to Israel and expressed a preference for Hamas over Israel. Despite claiming to be anti-Israel rather than antisemitic, his statements have sparked criticism.
Their electronic travel authorization was canceled by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood citing concerns that their presence could fuel antisemitism. This action mirrors the government’s previous decision to ban Kanye West due to anti-semitic comments.
Uygur criticized the ban, questioning freedom of expression and accusing the UK government of oppression. Piker echoed these sentiments, alleging that Israel influenced the decision and condemned Western values being undermined.
The Community Security Trust urged SXSW to act responsibly and not provide a platform for Piker, citing his history of promoting anti-semitic themes and extremist group support.
Labour MP David Taylor welcomed the visa revocation, emphasizing the importance of barring individuals spreading hate and division. He called for tighter vetting policies at SXSW London to prevent similar incidents.
Arwa Elrayess, president of the Oxford Union, expressed concerns over the decision to bar Uygur, emphasizing the Union’s commitment to free speech and open debate.
The Home Office defended its decision, stating that cancellations were made based on the potential risk individuals pose to UK society. In a similar move, the government blocked 11 foreign nationals labeled as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK for a rally led by Tommy Robinson.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski criticized the decision, warning against silencing criticism of the Israeli government under a Labour administration. SXSW London reiterated its commitment to diverse voices and open dialogue despite the absence of Uygur and Piker.
This rewrite focuses on the exclusion of two American commentators with anti-Israel views from entering the UK. It maintains the original content’s essence while offering a fresh perspective for readers.
