“Warning Ignored: Quarry Trespassers Risk Lives”

Despite being closed off after two tragic deaths over a decade ago, people are still breaking into a quarry in Worcestershire, ignoring warnings from the Malvern Hills Trust about the extreme danger of the site. Some individuals were even seen swimming in the quarry during the recent Bank Holiday weekend, defying safety regulations.

Deborah Fox, the chief executive of the trust, expressed concern over the ongoing unauthorized use of the Gullet Quarry, emphasizing the significant risks involved. The quarry has been inaccessible for years due to the deaths of two young men, Russell O’Neill and Justas Juzenas, who drowned in the lake in 2013.

Fox reiterated the perilous nature of swimming in the quarry, highlighting the potential for cold water shock and drowning, especially during the UK’s recent heatwave. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued warnings about the dangers of sudden cold water exposure, emphasizing that cold water shock can affect even strong swimmers.

Tragically, the heatwave has resulted in 17 water-related fatalities across the UK, with incidents including the death of a 13-year-old girl in the River Wharfe and a woman in her 60s who lost her life while attempting to rescue her dog in Thornton-Cleveleys. Among the victims is Junior Slater, a 12-year-old boy who faced difficulties in the River Ribble, as confirmed by Lancashire Police.

The series of tragic incidents serves as a stark reminder of the hazards associated with water activities, especially in quarries and rivers. Authorities urge the public to prioritize safety and heed warnings to prevent further loss of life in water-related accidents.
