Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has made a firm commitment to escalate the conflict with Russia, aiming to inflict significant damage on the Russian economy and populace. This pledge follows Kyiv’s successful strikes on key Russian territories, including the Kerch Bridge, which connects Russia to Crimea, an area that Ukraine claims is illegally occupied by Russia. Moreover, Ukraine’s strategic attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, such as the recent strike on the Moscow refinery, have led to the prohibition of gas sales to Crimean residents.
The ongoing strikes on both sides of the Kerch Strait have put immense pressure on Russian forces, with Ukraine seeking to disrupt Putin’s military capabilities and financial resources simultaneously. Zelensky has highlighted the increasing frequency of missile and drone attacks by Russian forces on Ukrainian civilians, with over 2,200 drones, 1,800 guided aerial bombs, and 87 missiles launched at Ukrainian territory in the past week alone.
The intensified conflict has resulted in civilian casualties in regions like Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Poltava. Zelensky emphasized the importance of channeling the people’s justified anger into decisive action, stressing that Russia must bear the consequences of its aggression. Gas sales to civilians in Crimea have been severely restricted due to Ukraine’s relentless long-range assaults, now allocated solely for military and security purposes.
Recent incidents, such as a drone attack claiming the lives of three family members in Sumy and missile strikes in Odesa, underscore the escalating violence in the region. Ukrainian special forces have repeatedly targeted the Kerch Bridge in an effort to disrupt essential supplies to Russian forces, contributing to logistical challenges and supply shortages. Ukrainian troops have effectively stalled the Russian advance through strategic assaults, forcing Putin’s military to redirect resources to defend against counterattacks.
The Institute for the Study of War noted that Ukrainian special forces’ operations have significantly impeded the Russian advance, prompting the redeployment of Russian tank divisions to counter Ukrainian offensives. By targeting Russian oil and transport infrastructure, Ukraine aims to disrupt Russian logistics, strain energy supplies, and exacerbate fuel shortages in occupied Crimea.
