A young man faced critical injuries after a quad bike accident in Greece, sustaining 12 fractured vertebrae, 11 broken ribs, and a punctured lung during a €50 ride. Alfie Moses, 18, was on a holiday trip with friends in Zante to celebrate his birthday when the incident occurred. He was riding at approximately 40mph when he lost control, hitting a raised part of the road and being thrown off the quad bike.
Alfie was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Mediterraneo Hospital in Athens for further care due to severe internal injuries. His mother, Kayley Posnett, shared that he also suffered a ruptured spleen, brain bleed, and a broken shoulder. Despite the gravity of the situation, there are positive signs of improvement as he has started communicating again, although he remains in intensive care.
The family is facing substantial medical expenses, with initial costs exceeding £17,000, and ongoing care and surgery adding to the financial burden. Kayley expressed concerns about the lack of insurance coverage for quad bike accidents and highlighted safety issues with quad bike rentals for young tourists abroad. She emphasized the need for better regulations and awareness regarding the risks associated with quad biking.
Alfie’s recovery journey is expected to be prolonged and intricate, with doctors closely monitoring his progress. While he awaits spinal surgery to stabilize his back, he continues to receive treatment for lung contusions and other injuries. Despite the challenges, his family remains hopeful for his recovery and appreciative of the medical care he is receiving in Athens.
