“Former Coworker’s Warnings Ignored in Nursery Abuse Case”

A former coworker of Nathan Bennett, a convicted paedophile nursery worker, revealed her repeated attempts to raise concerns about his inappropriate behavior with young children. Despite her efforts, she was dismissed and told she was imagining things. Bennett, 30, was sentenced to 30 years after being found guilty of multiple offenses, including rape and sexual assault, involving five toddlers at a nursery in Bristol.

The ex-nursery worker, Bessie Martin, expressed discomfort with Bennett’s actions towards children months prior to his arrest. She observed him holding children for extended periods and positioning them out of CCTV view. Despite her continuous alerts to management, Bennett’s abusive behavior was only uncovered later.

According to Bessie, her concerns were dismissed, leaving her feeling isolated in her observations. It was only when she escalated her worries to senior management that Bennett was temporarily suspended. However, he was allowed to return to work briefly before being caught on CCTV engaging in inappropriate conduct with a child.

Following Bennett’s suspension, authorities were notified, leading to his arrest. Prior to this, parents had also reported his misconduct to nursery management, but some concerns were not properly relayed to the authorities as required by law. The lack of concrete evidence from CCTV left many parents uncertain if their children had been victims of abuse.

During the trial, staff described Bennett as possessive over certain children and displayed concerning behavior. Partou, the nursery’s operator, emphasized their commitment to safeguarding and implementing stricter protocols. Despite the closure of the nursery where the incidents occurred, Partou continues to operate numerous sites across England.

The investigation revealed that Partou nurseries had an above-average rate of official notices for safeguarding concerns following Bennett’s arrest. The company defended these statistics, citing differing standards among providers. An independent review identified shortcomings at the Bristol nursery, leading to disciplinary actions and ongoing internal processes for staff involved.

Families affected by the tragedy demanded accountability and transparency from Partou regarding the lapses in safeguarding that allowed Bennett to harm children. The law firm representing these families echoed the need for answers and a thorough examination of the nursery’s safeguarding procedures.
