“Windrush Anchor Recovery Campaign Honors Legacy”

On 22 June 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, marking a significant moment in its storied history. The ship, a grand vessel, transported over 1,000 passengers from Jamaica to the port in Essex with the aim of aiding in the reconstruction efforts of post-World War Two Britain.

Known as the Windrush Generation, their impact is honored annually on Windrush Day as a tribute to the contributions they and their descendants have made to the United Kingdom. Recently, The Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation launched a £2 million fundraising campaign to retrieve the ship’s anchor from the Mediterranean seabed. The vessel had sunk near Algeria in 1954 after an engine explosion that tragically claimed the lives of four crew members.

Originally a troop carrier, the ship had rescued 1,494 individuals, including servicemen returning from the Far East after the Korean War, in a remarkable maritime rescue operation. Despite Royal Navy efforts to salvage the ship, it remains submerged.

Constructed as the Monte Rosa in Germany in 1930, the vessel was repurposed by the German Navy at the start of the war. It was infamously used by the Nazis in 1942 to transport 46 Norwegian Jews to their deaths in Auschwitz. Seized by the British as a war prize, the ship was renamed HMT Empire Windrush and served a more honorable role until its tragic demise.

The Windrush Memorial Anchor Foundation, led by Marie van der Zyl OBE, aims to raise funds for the anchor’s recovery, preservation, and installation of a memorial. Educational and community programs centered around the ship’s history will also be supported by the campaign. Donations are encouraged through the GoFundMe page dedicated to this cause.

Additionally, a Windrush Board Game, designed to educate individuals of all ages about the Windrush Generation’s history and contributions, is available for purchase. Plans for a replica anchor for outreach events and educational activities across the UK are in progress. Sir Patrick Vernon, Chair of the Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation, emphasizes the anchor’s symbolic significance in representing courage, hope, and the enduring legacy of the Windrush Generation in shaping modern Britain.

Through these initiatives, the Foundation seeks to ensure that the story and impact of the Windrush Generation are remembered and understood by future generations. Donations to support these efforts can be made through the campaign’s GoFundMe page.
