A woman who was severely injured in a vicious shark attack has spoken her first words after being brought out of a medically induced coma, as per her family’s update.
Leah Stewart, aged 35, was attacked by a great white shark while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on June 13.
She was swiftly taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in critical condition, where medical professionals had to amputate her arm and conduct multiple surgeries while she was in intensive care.
Her family has been providing regular updates on her condition, with her brother Joshua issuing a heartfelt statement recently.
Joshua mentioned that after a week of life support and surgeries, doctors were able to remove the breathing tube and reduce sedation to wake Leah from the coma briefly. During this time, Leah expressed her love to her mother and partner, who have been by her side since the incident. Her first concern was for her daughter’s well-being.
Despite the positive progress, Leah remains in intensive care and faces a challenging recovery journey, as reported by the Daily Mail.
A crowdfunding campaign has raised a substantial amount to support Leah’s rehabilitation and healthcare needs, with donations reaching $488,000, according to the Express.
The incident occurred while Leah was swimming at Coogee Beach when Charlie Verco, an off-duty lifeguard, rescued her after the attack. She received emergency medical care on the beach before being airlifted to the hospital.
Leah, a teacher at Hurstville Adventist School, had previously worked at Sydney Adventist School in Auburn. Former colleagues fondly remembered her passion for Australian Survivor and expressed their support for her recovery.
Authorities have temporarily allowed drone surveillance at Coogee Beach following the incident, as the area was not under active monitoring due to flight restrictions.
The shark involved in the attack is estimated to be three to four meters long.
