Rory McIlroy Takes UK Break Before US Open

Rory McIlroy is currently taking a brief respite at his newly acquired residence in the UK before his upcoming participation in the US Open. The world No. 2 recently competed in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, securing a tie for 12th place.

Scoring four under par, the 37-year-old is preparing for the third major tournament of the year. Despite this, McIlroy opted out of participating in the Canadian Open this week to return to England.

Following a 3,650-mile journey from Dublin, Ohio to Wentworth, McIlroy is settling into his new home on an exclusive Surrey estate for a six-day stay before heading to Southampton, New York for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

By choosing to spend time at his family home, McIlroy will miss the chance to compete in the Canadian Open, which offers a total prize pool of £7.3 million, with the winner receiving a £1.3 million top prize.

“I had a couple of weeks off and we settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days,” McIlroy mentioned before the Memorial Tournament.

Having purchased the £9 million home in 2023, McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll have been renovating the property, which was already one of the finest in the area. The six-bedroom mansion has undergone extensions and transformations as the couple, along with their daughter Poppy, transition from Florida.

Previously residing in a luxurious £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, purchased from golf legend Ernie Els in 2017, McIlroy and Stoll have now settled among high-profile neighbors in Surrey, including Elton John and Cliff Richard. Notably, the Sultan of Brunei, with a staggering net worth of £22.3 billion, is among the prominent figures in the vicinity.

Reflecting on his performance at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy acknowledged struggles with driver inconsistency this season but remains optimistic about his prospects at the upcoming US Open.

As he focuses on clinching a second major title of the season at Shinnecock Hills after defending his Masters title in April, McIlroy expressed his goal to improve daily in preparation for the tournament.
