“Rachel Nickell’s Son Recalls Traumatic Murder Witness”

Rachel Nickell’s son recently shared the traumatic memory of witnessing his mother’s murder as a child, an event that has profoundly impacted his life. The young mother, Rachel Nickell, fell victim to serial killer Robert Napper’s brutal attack while out with her son Alex on Wimbledon Common on July 15, 1992.

Following the murder, Colin Stagg, a local dog walker, was mistakenly arrested due to his resemblance to a suspect photofit, but the case collapsed in court due to questionable police tactics. It took 16 years for Napper to be brought to justice through advanced DNA profiling, linking him conclusively to the crime. He is currently detained at Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital.

In addition to Rachel Nickell’s manslaughter, Napper is suspected of being involved in numerous other attacks across southeast London. After the tragic incident, Rachel’s son Alex and his father, André Hanscombe, relocated to southern France in 1993 and later to Spain in 1996 to start anew.

Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Alex vividly recalls Napper approaching them on the Common, pulling out a knife, and brutally attacking his mother. Despite being the primary target, Alex also suffered minor injuries and vividly remembers feeling helpless in protecting his mother.

Alex disclosed for the first time that Rachel had discovered she was pregnant eight months before the tragedy but chose to have an abortion due to financial struggles. The family suspected she might be pregnant again shortly before the attack, a fact that remains uncertain.

Over the years, Alex has forgiven his mother’s killer but has criticized the authorities for their failures that allowed Napper to continue his reign of terror. Describing the aftermath as a time of profound sorrow and silence, Alex expressed feeling a guiding presence through the turmoil.

The upcoming release of two TV portrayals of the case, a documentary titled “The Murder of Rachel Nickell” and a dramatized series named “The Witness,” is set for June 4 on Netflix. In “The Witness,” actors will portray André and Alex Hanscombe, while the real-life individuals will appear in the documentary.
