Two-year-old Lane Thomas Graves tragically lost his life in an alligator incident at Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa ten years ago. To honor his memory, Lane’s parents, Matt and Melissa Graves, shared with The Today Show that Lane was a special and caring boy who deeply loved his family. In commemoration of the anniversary of his passing, a nine-minute memorial video produced by the couple will be released on the Lane Thomas Foundation’s website.
Matt and Melissa Graves vowed to turn the tragedy into something positive for other families after promising Lane at his wake. The incident occurred in June 2016 when the Graves family from Nebraska was vacationing at the resort, and Lane was attacked by an alligator while playing in a lagoon. Despite his father’s efforts to protect him, Lane’s body was discovered the next day by a dive team.
In response to the heartbreaking loss, Lane’s parents established the Lane Thomas Foundation to provide support to families facing crises. The foundation focuses on assisting families of children in need of transplants and promoting organ donation awareness. Melissa and Matt Graves, who welcomed a son named Christian Lane Graves two years after Lane’s passing, believe that their new child is a blessing and that Lane continues to watch over his siblings as their guardian angel.
In a related development, wildlife officials removed 250 alligators from Disney properties in 2021 following Lane’s tragic incident.
