Nigel Farage is under pressure to clarify whether he reported allegations of Russian espionage targeting his phone to expose a hidden £5 million “donation” from a cryptocurrency magnate.
Initially, the Reform UK leader stated that the controversial payment from businessman Christopher Harborne was for his personal security. Later, he claimed it was a token of appreciation for his advocacy for Brexit.
Following the disclosure of the “donation,” Reform UK asserted that an investigation by counter-espionage specialists revealed that hostile foreign agents, likely tied to Moscow, attempted to compromise Farage’s communications and financial accounts.
Anna Turley, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, has called on Farage to confirm if he alerted law enforcement or security agencies about the incident. Failure to do so within 24 hours, Labour warns, will prompt them to pursue an investigation.
Turley emphasized in her message to Farage the significance of swiftly reporting any potential foreign cyber intrusions for national security, political integrity, and public trust in the democratic system.
Farage did not disclose the contribution in the members’ interests register, as he received it shortly before his election as an MP in 2024, violating regulations requiring MPs to declare financial interests for the previous year.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is now reviewing whether Farage violated these obligations, while the Electoral Commission is contemplating launching its own inquiry. Harborne, a UK entrepreneur residing in Thailand, donated £12 million to Reform UK in the previous year.
In response, a spokesperson for Reform indicated that the incident had been reported to relevant authorities but refrained from specifying to whom. The spokesperson stated that further comments would be inappropriate while investigations are ongoing.
