Mother, partner, and stepson convicted in brutal murder of 5-year-old: Preliminary hearing reveals tragic details

A mother who killed her five-year-old son, leading to his body being discarded in a river, participated in a preliminary hearing regarding the child’s demise. Angharad Williamson, 34, observed the session remotely from HMP Downview in Surrey, where she is serving a minimum of 28 years for the murder of Logan Mwangi.

Logan suffered 56 external injuries, a torn liver, and brain trauma as a result of severe abuse in his Bridgend, South Wales, home. Despite being under the supervision of social services, Logan’s previous injuries such as a broken arm, collarbone, and burns went unnoticed by authorities.

Alongside Williamson, her then partner John Cole, 41, and stepson Craig Mulligan, 14, were also found guilty of Logan’s murder. Cole disposed of Logan’s body in the River Ogmore, a location near their residence, where he often illegally dumped rubbish.

A pre-inquest review of Logan’s death commenced at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, with officials from local health services, social services, and South Wales Police attending. Williamson, who denied the murder, was found to have been active on her phone and manipulating lights in the house during the time of the incident.

Despite Williamson’s unsuccessful appeal, she has sought a former senior police officer, Tony Thompson, to review her case for potential further appeals. Horrific details of Logan’s mistreatment were disclosed during a lengthy trial in 2022, revealing the child’s isolation and punishment leading up to his tragic death.

Medical experts likened Logan’s injuries to those from a severe fall or high-speed car crash. Williamson, Cole, and Mulligan received life sentences, with Williamson serving a minimum of 28 years. Another hearing related to Logan’s death is scheduled for November.
