The mother of a 19-year-old victim in the Nottingham attacks is requesting a meeting with Keir Starmer, expressing dissatisfaction with how the justice system handled Valdo Calocane’s case.
Emma Webber, the mother of Barnaby, stated that various agencies failed to prevent Calocane, who is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, from killing three individuals and attempting to murder three others on June 13, 2023. Calocane, aged 32, is currently under psychiatric detention after confessing to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Addressing the press at the families’ conference, Ms. Webber criticized the NHS mental health services and the police for their shortcomings. She emphasized that Calocane avoided a murder conviction by pleading guilty to manslaughter, depriving the victims and their families of proper justice.
Ms. Webber highlighted overlooked evidence indicating Calocane’s history and behavior should have been thoroughly examined. She suggested that despite his mental illness, Calocane was fully aware of his actions.
Urging for a meeting at No 10 Downing Street within the next month, she insisted that Calocane should not evade accountability through legal loopholes.
James Coates, son of one of the victims, Ian, highlighted the failures uncovered by the inquiry, including Nottinghamshire Police’s failure to execute an arrest warrant for Calocane before the attack. He also criticized the NHS for discharging Calocane back into the community despite concerns about his whereabouts.
Coates emphasized the need for accountability within the institutions that failed to prevent the tragedy and vowed to fight for justice on behalf of all affected families.
