Kate and Gerry McCann were in attendance to support their son Sean at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. Sean, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, represented Scotland in the 400m individual freestyle swimming event, with his twin sister Amelie also present in the stands at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
During the event, Kate, aged 58, wore a t-shirt with the phrase ‘Yes Sir, I can boogie,’ a nod to the popular 1977 hit by Baccara, which has become a well-known Scottish football anthem. Sean and Amelie, now 21 years old, were merely two years old when Madeleine went missing from their family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007.
Sean, a Leicester athlete studying chemical engineering at Loughborough University, began his competitive swimming journey at the age of eight. Despite being raised in England, he competes for Scotland due to his father’s Scottish heritage. Sean’s dedication to swimming has led him to various competitions, including the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, the European junior open water championships in Corfu, and the British Championships.
Having previously participated in the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, Sean’s recent achievement at the senior Commonwealth Games is a testament to his ongoing pursuit of excellence in the sport. He has expressed his aspirations to compete in future events such as the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Sean’s commitment to swimming is evident through his rigorous training regime, which includes multiple weekly early morning sessions in the pool and gym. His impressive track record and determination highlight his potential as he continues to strive for success in the sport.
