This week, the residents of Greater Manchester are gearing up for a significant by-election, touted as one of the most extensive in the nation’s history.
The decision at hand is quite straightforward: it’s a choice between making daily life simpler and more affordable for everyone or handing over control to individuals intent on fostering division among us.
I am confident that come Thursday, we will opt to progress collectively and shape a future that benefits us all. Throughout history, Greater Manchester has been known for charting its own course, being the birthplace of the industrial revolution, trade union movements, suffragettes, and the advocacy for equal rights.
Despite experiencing the fastest economic growth in the country, many still find life challenging in our region. To address this, my aim as Mayor, if elected, is clear: every decision I make will aim to enhance affordability and convenience for all. One of my initial steps will be to introduce free bus travel for all 11–18-year-olds, saving families up to £500 annually and ensuring unrestricted mobility for young individuals.
The prosperity of Greater Manchester hinges on ensuring that everyone reaps the rewards of progress. To achieve this, initiatives like the Good Growth Fund have been established to distribute growth evenly across all areas. While efforts are made on a national scale, I am committed to driving this growth locally as Mayor.
Promoting ‘good growth’ means creating well-paying jobs, ensuring job security, and revitalizing town centers. As Mayor, I will uphold and expand on the work initiated by Andy, focusing on providing comprehensive career guidance, work opportunities, and fostering a sense of pride within local communities. Additionally, revenue generated from city center growth will be channeled into a High Streets Fund to rejuvenate town centers and support local businesses.
Taking a stand against discord and divisiveness, my campaign embodies a positive and optimistic approach, reflecting the can-do spirit of our community. Through practical yet visionary strategies, we aim to combat divisive rhetoric by enhancing financial well-being and nurturing hope for a brighter future.
With a vision of Andy in No10 (North!), my mayoral candidacy, and the unwavering spirit of our region, the possibilities are boundless.
Coming from a council estate, I understand the critical importance of having a secure and affordable home, especially during tough times. However, the current housing situation leaves many without this security. As Manchester Leader, we made strides by constructing more council and social homes last year than in the past 25 years, a trend I plan to escalate if elected as Mayor.
Proposing to build 50,000 affordable council homes across all boroughs, my vision is to support the upcoming generation in achieving success. I am pleased to have the endorsement of Andy Burnham, who shares the commitment to bolstering council housing as a key aspect of securing individuals’ futures.
In a literal sense, my mayoral campaign involves participating in a Parkrun across every borough of Greater Manchester, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of volunteers in sustaining sports and running clubs.
The overwhelming support received during these events, including appearances by notable figures, underscores the community’s enthusiasm. However, I do maintain a playful rule for politicians in attendance: no short shorts allowed!
Given the magnitude of this upcoming by-election, predictions suggest that it may be a closely contested race. Initial polling data places Labour at 33 and Reform at 30. Despite the ongoing political events elsewhere, every vote counts, and it is crucial to elect a Mayor with a proven track record of championing common interests and achieving tangible results.
