“Man Sentenced to Prison for Attempted Child Sexual Activities”

A man, Matthew Hickman, 29, was sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to engage in sexual activities with a child after falling victim to a police sting operation. Hickman, residing in Lewisham, southeast London, believed he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl named ‘Jess’ and made plans to travel to Norfolk for a sexual encounter. The court learned that Hickman falsely claimed to be 19 years old and suggested purchasing lingerie for the teenager from Primark.

During the sentencing, Judge Mr. Recorder David Jeremy KC revealed that an undercover police officer posed as a 14-year-old girl named ‘Jess’ on social media, using a profile picture of a girl in a school uniform, which initiated the case. Hickman engaged in explicit conversations with the officer, sending inappropriate messages and images of himself.

Hickman was arrested on December 5, 2024, after authorities discovered indecent images of children on his devices, including images in the highest category A. Despite denying any sexual interest in children during his interviews, Hickman pleaded guilty to two charges of arranging sexual activities and three charges of possessing indecent images. He was sentenced to 36 months in prison, given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, and instructed to pay £228 in victim surcharge and additional costs.

The judge expressed hope for Hickman to seek help during his time in custody to address his offending behavior and emphasized the severity of his actions in attempting to engage in sexual activities with a minor.
