A man named Dan Kelly, aged 38, has shared his experiences after visiting 1,000 supermarkets across 150 countries. Dan, a languages and humanities graduate, began his global supermarket journey in 2014 while searching for a job. He landed a role with a company that required him to gather pricing data in supermarkets worldwide for businesses relocating their staff.
Dan’s job involved traveling to various major cities every few days with a list of around 164 products to determine their prices for reporting back to a London office. Through his work, Dan became familiar with supermarkets, shopping centers, and even airline interiors around the world.
During his 11-year tenure, Dan explored supermarkets in 150 countries, traveling solo with a daily accommodation allowance of £70. He revealed that he discovered certain British products, such as tea, coffee, and specific types of biscuits, which were commonly found in supermarkets worldwide.
Despite moving on from his role, Dan fondly remembers his time and has even created a comedy show based on his experiences. He emphasized the importance of human connection in his work, noting that simple interactions like saying hello could open doors during his supermarket visits.
While Dan has extensive knowledge of global supermarket pricing, UK consumers were recently informed that ALDI was the most affordable supermarket in May. According to Which?, after comparing the prices of 95 products, ALDI offered the lowest total price at £168.30.
Which? explained that they determine the most affordable supermarket by comparing prices across hundreds of grocery items at eight major supermarkets using an independent price comparison website. They calculate the average price of each item per month for each supermarket and then sum up to find the average total price for comparison.
