A physician in London, Ontario, Canada, has been suspended for euthanizing a man with Crohn’s disease following a brief medical evaluation outside a fast-food establishment. Dr. James MacLean faced police scrutiny for allegedly mishandling Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) procedures for two patients. One of them, Thomas Dillon, was assessed by Dr. MacLean in June 2023, meeting the criteria for euthanasia under a specific track designed for patients with incurable conditions not facing immediate death.
Dr. MacLean, currently under “extensive oversight,” engaged in numerous text exchanges with Mr. Dillon regarding the procedure and even personally escorted him to a morgue on the day of the event. Mr. Dillon passed away in June 2024 at an industrial facility used for holding deceased individuals before burial, having received a lethal mixture of drugs.
Further complaints brought to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) involved another case where a cancer patient, authorized for MAID due to foreseeable natural death, lost consciousness before the scheduled date. Dr. MacLean, equipped with a MAID kit, administered sedatives and propofol at the patient’s residence, leading to complications with breathing and the need for additional medication to induce final cessation.
The CPSO committee highlighted concerns over Dr. MacLean’s conduct, particularly emphasizing his communication and professional standards. As a result, the doctor received a verbal caution and mandatory clinical supervision for a minimum of six months. The agreement with the college also includes enhanced monitoring of his MAID practice and professional development requirements related to patient care, consent procedures, documentation protocols, and maintaining professional boundaries.
Responding to the allegations, Dr. MacLean cited confidentiality obligations and privacy regulations, refraining from providing further comments. The CPSO spokesperson emphasized the rigorous oversight measures imposed on Dr. MacLean’s practice, underlining the importance of compliance with professional standards and patient care in such sensitive medical procedures.
