In a tragic turn of events, a wealthy heiress, Caroline von Rantzau, was fatally shot at a high-end safari lodge in South Africa, just a day after the untimely death of her close friend and senior colleague on the same property. The incident took place at the Leeuwfontein hunting reserve, owned by her affluent family with shipping industry ties, on June 1.
The shocking deaths of Caroline von Rantzau, aged 26, and financial manager Arno Koën, aged 44, who was found shot dead a day earlier, have brought the spotlight onto the expansive Limpopo estate. Authorities are now investigating a potential connection between the two killings.
Initially, misinformation from the family’s business indicated that von Rantzau had perished in a car accident. However, subsequent investigations revealed that both deaths were the result of gun violence. Koën was discovered on May 31 with gunshot wounds from a 9mm pistol, and later, gunshots were reportedly heard on the property again. Von Rantzau was then found with fatal injuries from a .357 calibre hunting rifle.
Reports suggest that the firearm possibly used in the incident could have been taken from a gun cabinet belonging to her father, Dr. Eberhart Rantzau. Despite a thorough two-day search of the estate by the police, including interviews with witnesses and collection of forensic evidence, no motive has been confirmed, and no arrests have been made. Law enforcement authorities are actively exploring various leads.
The shocking deaths have deeply affected the von Rantzau family, well-known in Germany’s shipping sector. Caroline von Rantzau was a rising figure in her family’s Hamburg-based business empire, managed by her father, which recently divested its container shipping division to Hapag-Lloyd in 2022. The family also maintains investments in container infrastructure in South Africa.
Living in the country, von Rantzau had recently expanded her real estate holdings with two additional properties near the Mozambique border. Described as an animal lover who dedicated much of her time to caring for animals on the estate, she was also a passionate hunter. Close to Koën, who oversaw financial matters and bookings at the lodge, she reportedly regarded him as a “foster father” and “mentor.”
Malesela Ledwaba, a police spokesperson, highlighted the importance of post-mortem examinations in shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic events. He emphasized that the autopsy results would dictate whether further investigations involving other individuals would be pursued.
