Liz Kendall is determined to dismantle obstacles for women in the technology industry, challenging the dominance of men in this sector. As the Technology Secretary, she highlighted the perception that tech mainly benefits a select group of powerful and wealthy individuals, particularly Silicon Valley tech leaders.
A forthcoming independent report reveals that women in the digital economy could potentially gain around £7,000 annually by overcoming barriers. These gains encompass not only increased pay but also factors like improved working conditions, flexibility, and overall work culture. The report by Alma Economics also suggests that removing barriers for women in the digital economy could boost the UK’s GDP by up to £4 billion.
Following a government call for input on women’s experiences in tech, more than 500 individuals and organizations shared accounts of misconduct, harassment, and discrimination in the industry. Liz Kendall emphasized the need for tech opportunities to be accessible to all individuals, not just a privileged few.
To promote gender diversity in the tech field, Liz Kendall has initiated various measures, including introducing a new charter that offers paid family leave and flexible work arrangements for women in research. She has also established a women in tech taskforce to encourage more women and girls to pursue careers in technology and address barriers to education, training, and career advancement.
Over 50 research institutions have already pledged to support the new charter, signaling a growing commitment to gender equality in the sector. The government is also expanding the Daphne Jackson Fellowship program to assist individuals returning to research careers after extended breaks for family, health, or caregiving reasons.
Kathy Kotiadis, an operations professor at Kent Business School and a former Daphne Jackson fellow, emphasized the importance of providing support to women facing challenges in re-entering the workforce. She highlighted the systemic issues of bias and discrimination that many women encounter, underscoring the need to retain and nurture talented female professionals in the industry.
As Liz Kendall solidifies her focus on advancing women in tech, she remains committed to advocating for a brighter future for all individuals in the science and technology sectors.
