“Wimbledon Foundation & WaterAid Transform Lives in Malawi”

In the early hours of each day, Dina Njati embarks on a strenuous eight-hour mission to procure water for her family. The 37-year-old descends a steep hillside to fill a 20-liter container from a small muddy pond, carrying it back home on her head. This process is repeated to gather water for cooking, laundry, and bathing. However, the journey is just one part of her struggles.

The sole water source in Mkambabisi, Malawi, where Dina resides, is often contaminated, leading to illnesses for both her and her daughter. Despite knowing the cause, they continue using the water due to the lack of alternatives.

This situation is not unique to Dina, as one out of three individuals in Malawi lacks access to clean water, and over half the population lacks proper sanitation facilities.

A positive change is on the horizon as a new borehole funded by the Wimbledon Foundation and implemented by WaterAid is set to revolutionize life in Dina’s village. This project will replace hazardous daily trips with easily accessible clean water, empowering Dina to resume her carpentry career that she had to abandon to care for her grandfather.

The installation of clean water will not only improve health but also pave the way for a better future. The impact of unsafe water is evident, especially in maternity clinics, where the absence of clean water poses significant risks to mothers and newborns, increasing the likelihood of life-threatening infections, such as sepsis.

Clean water initiatives have already made a significant difference in various communities. For instance, Lydia Konjwani, who currently struggles to access water, anticipates a positive shift in her future once clean water reaches her village.

Ensuring access to clean water is not just a necessity but a fundamental human right that can transform lives and entire communities. Providing clean water can empower individuals to take charge of their destinies and create better opportunities for themselves and future generations.
