Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister, stating that the Labour Party has an opportunity to move in a new direction and fulfill its commitment to change.
In an emotional address outside No10, the PM expressed his intention to focus on being a devoted husband and father to his children. He acknowledged that some Labour MPs did not believe he was the best candidate to lead the party into the next general election but vowed to support his successor wholeheartedly.
Following a weekend of reflection at Chequers with his family, Mr. Starmer, accompanied by his wife Vic, received applause from No10 staff and government advisers as he made his resignation statement.
Reflecting on his tenure, Starmer highlighted the challenges he faced upon taking office, including revitalizing a Labour Party in crisis and disproving skeptics who doubted the party’s viability. He emphasized the transformative efforts to combat issues like antisemitism, rebuild public trust, and prioritize national interests.
The outgoing Prime Minister outlined his administration’s achievements over the past two years, including economic growth, wage increases, enhanced rights for workers and renters, increased defense spending, and improvements in healthcare and social welfare.
Despite his accomplishments, Starmer acknowledged the party’s need for new leadership and confirmed his resignation as Labour Party leader. He informed the National Executive Committee of his decision and proposed a timeline for selecting his successor before Parliament resumes in September.
Expressing gratitude to his supporters and colleagues, Starmer emphasized his commitment to a smooth transition of power and pledged unwavering support to the incoming leader. He concluded by expressing his dedication to his family and thanked them for their unwavering support throughout his political journey.
