After 742 years of operation, Ruthin School, a renowned educational institution in the UK, is set to permanently close its doors, eliciting emotional reactions from students. The school, located in North Wales, will cease operations at the conclusion of the current term.
The decision to shutter the school was announced by Galaxy Global Education Group, a Chinese-owned entity that acquired the school earlier this year. Concurrently, the group disclosed the closure of Durham High School.
Approximately 240 pupils’ parents are now faced with the task of finding alternative schooling options for their children, as over 100 staff members are at risk of losing their jobs. The impending closure will lead Ruthin School into financial administration.
Despite its long-standing legacy and academic excellence, Ruthin School’s closure signifies its inability to sustain operations, as reported by North Wales Live. The institution was recently recognized as the leading independent school in North Wales in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 and ranked among the top boarding schools in the UK by the Independent Schools Council.
Expressing deep regret, Galaxy Global conveyed its profound sorrow over the closure, emphasizing the sadness felt by all associated with Ruthin School. Despite exhaustive efforts to secure the school’s future, a financially viable path forward could not be established.
Parents of Ruthin School students have expressed shock and sadness at the sudden news, with one mother recounting her daughter’s emotional response to the closure. Families who paid monthly fees were taken aback by the announcement, which followed shortly after the fee collection.
In a poignant message, one individual lamented the end of the school’s 742-year journey, offering well wishes to those affected by similar circumstances.
