A woman who asserted that her spouse had fallen in their kitchen and landed on a small paring knife has been sentenced to life in prison for his murder.
Daryl Berman, aged 72, consistently claimed that the death of her husband, David Berman, aged 84, was accidental. The fatal incident occurred at their residence on Butterstile Lane in Prestwich in March of the previous year.
Following two trials, Berman was found guilty of murder and was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years at Minshull Street Crown Court. Her time spent in custody, totaling 192 days, will be deducted from her sentence, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
During sentencing, Judge Tina Landale mentioned that Berman had been caring and nurturing towards her husband, but circumstances had changed for the worse. The exact sequence of events leading to the fatal encounter remained unclear, causing ongoing distress to his children.
According to a victim impact statement from Mr. Berman’s daughter, Debbie Davis, the revelation of her father’s demise at the hands of Daryl has been a continuous nightmare, affecting her mental well-being and emotional state significantly.
The court learned that emergency services were contacted by Berman herself on March 13, 2025, reporting her husband’s injury. Upon examination, it was discovered that the stab wound exhibited typical characteristics of a homicide, with the possibility of an accidental fall causing the fatal injury deemed highly unlikely.
Despite a 27-year marriage described as loving and supportive, with no history of domestic violence or police involvement, Berman’s behavior following her husband’s death raised suspicions among family members and investigators.
In response to the tragic incident, Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson expressed sympathy for David Berman’s family and emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth behind the circumstances leading to his untimely death.
