“Driver in School Crash Tragedy Faces Court”

A woman named Claire Freemantle, aged 49, has been identified as the driver of a 4×4 vehicle that crashed into a primary school, resulting in the tragic deaths of two eight-year-old girls. The incident occurred in July 2023 in Wimbledon, South West London. Freemantle faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, including the deaths of schoolgirls Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau.

Appearing at Westminster Magistrates Court, Freemantle provided her personal details but did not enter pleas to the charges. She was seen in a black trouser suit, looking tearful, and was allowed to sit behind her barrister due to concerns raised about her health condition potentially triggering an epileptic attack.

Freemantle’s barrister informed the court that she had experienced a recent seizure, and she was granted unconditional bail. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring directed that all nine charges be transferred to the Crown Court for further proceedings, scheduling a court appearance at the Central Criminal Court on July 14th. Failure to appear would result in a warrant for her arrest.

Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police issued an apology for the handling of the case and its impact, stating a commitment to overhaul the way fatal and serious collisions are investigated.
