George and Amal Clooney have had to evacuate their residence in France due to wildfires wreaking havoc in parts of Europe. The renowned couple owns a property in the town of Brignoles in southeastern France, where wildfires, currently four times the size of Paris, have been devastating the region.
The Clooneys, prominent figures in Hollywood, are among the 200,000 individuals compelled to evacuate the area, including residents and tourists. Reports indicate that the couple penned a letter to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond expressing concern over the destructive impact of the fires.
In their letter, the Clooneys conveyed their uncertainty about the fate of their beloved home during this catastrophic period. Despite the evacuation, they emphasized their solidarity with the community, pledging to assist in the village’s recovery and reaffirming their love for Brignoles and its inhabitants.
Their sprawling 172-hectare estate, Domaine de Canadel, acquired in 2021 for approximately $USD8.3 million, serves as their primary abode where they reside with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella. France, like other European countries, has been severely affected by the wildfires exacerbated by heatwaves spanning across France, Spain, Greece, and Portugal.
The European Union’s emergency response chief has cautioned that the wildfires could potentially escalate to engulf all of Europe, with 2026 projected to witness the most extensive fire season in European history. The imminent days are expected to pose significant challenges, with the fire threat shifting towards the east after causing significant damage in France and the Iberian Peninsula.
Forecasts indicate a heightened risk for Italy in early August, raising concerns about the potential widespread impact across Europe if the fires spread further. The escalating wildfire crisis underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to mitigate the environmental and human toll of the ongoing blazes.
