Charleroi Airport, the second largest airport in Belgium located in Brussels, is set to undergo an 11-week closure in 2028 for a major renovation of its runway and overall revamp. This closure, scheduled from August 15 to October 31, 2028, is expected to impact around two million travelers, including those planning trips during the school summer holidays and October half-term break.
The renovation project, estimated to cost approximately €50 million (£42.8 million), will involve extensive work such as completely resurfacing the 3,200-meter runway. Various airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz Air, currently operating flights to and from the airport, will need to temporarily reroute their services to alternative airports.
Details on the specific rerouting plans are not yet available, but it is anticipated that flights will either be canceled or diverted during this period. The airport management announced that the comprehensive refurbishment of the airport’s sole runway, along with other significant infrastructure upgrades, is part of the works planned by SOWAER for the latter half of 2028.
