“FIFA Faces Probe Over Exorbitant World Cup Ticket Prices”

Criminal prosecutors in the United States are currently investigating the exorbitant ticket prices for England’s World Cup match at the renowned MetLife Stadium. New York and New Jersey attorneys general have jointly issued subpoenas to FIFA, the global football governing body, following numerous complaints from fans regarding deceptive ticket sales practices and inflated prices.

One disappointed England supporter, John Pearson, expressed frustration over the situation, stating that FIFA’s treatment of fans as mere cash sources is disgraceful. The investigation focuses on allegations of misleading seat information, with fans being reassigned to less desirable seats after purchasing tickets at high prices based on misleading seating maps.

The MetLife Stadium, temporarily rebranded as the New York New Jersey Stadium for the World Cup, is set to host eight matches, including the final on July 19. Authorities are scrutinizing whether FIFA manipulated seating categories and created new zones post-ticket sales, resulting in fans being placed in different sections than expected.

Ticket prices for the group stage matches ranged from £45 to over £445, with face-value prices for the final reaching up to £8,180. The resale market drove costs to unprecedented levels, with some platforms listing final tickets for nearly £1.5 million. In response to public outcry, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduced an initiative to offer £37 tickets to city residents.

The investigation by New York and New Jersey authorities is part of a broader legal challenge facing FIFA, as California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta has also requested information to assess potential violations of consumer protection laws during the ticket sales process. Despite these inquiries, FIFA has refrained from commenting on the investigations, maintaining that their pricing strategy aligns with market demand for each match.

The attorneys general in New York and New Jersey, along with their California counterpart, have emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in ticket sales, stating that fans deserve affordable tickets and the assurance that purchased tickets match the ones received.
