“FIA Approves Engine Rule Changes for 2027-2028 F1 Seasons”

The FIA has officially confirmed a set of rule changes for the 2027 and 2028 Formula One seasons. The key adjustment involves the ratio between combustion and electric power in the engines, transitioning from the current 53/47 split to a 60/40 split in two years.

According to the FIA statement, discussions among the FIA, FOM, Teams, and Power Unit Manufacturers resulted in an agreement to modify the Formula 1 Technical, Sporting, and Financial Regulations. These changes aim to address concerns related to energy management under the new Power Unit framework identified since the start of the 2026 season.

The modifications are designed to tackle issues concerning energy management, fuel energy flow characteristics, and enhancing Qualifying sessions without compromising the thrilling racing generated by the recent regulations. The plan involves a gradual rebalancing of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System contributions over the 2027 and 2028 seasons, including adjustments to engine output, fuel flow, and energy recovery system deployment.

Initially expected to be fully implemented for the 2027 season, the changes faced opposition from several power unit manufacturers, leading to a compromise for a phased introduction of the alterations. This shift will reduce reliance on the battery, aiming to address concerns such as derating on long straights.

In the current season, drivers have raised widespread complaints about the new 50/50 electric-to-combustion engines. Notably, Max Verstappen has been vocal about his discontent with the regulations, even hinting at retirement if the situation persists. The recent announcement indicates progress in addressing the challenges faced by drivers.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship, extending his lead after winning the Monaco Grand Prix. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton follows in second place, with Antonelli’s teammate George Russell in third as they prepare for the upcoming race in Barcelona.
