A 25-year-old man tragically took his own life in front of his father following his struggles to secure his first significant employment opportunity. James Keeping battled escalating mental health challenges in the months leading up to the incident, seeking help and disclosing suicidal thoughts during a medical consultation. Unfortunately, he passed away at the family farm in Duns Tew, near Bicester, on February 15.
During an inquest at Oxford Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that James had encountered difficulties in finding a fulfilling job after completing his university studies in 2024. He had reached out on LinkedIn for assistance in job hunting, expressing his eagerness, motivation, and adaptability gained from diverse experiences, such as aiding in earthquake relief efforts in Nepal and supporting conservation diving projects in Mexico.
Prior to the heartbreaking event, James’ father, Simon, who had a previous career running a jet wash firm for two decades, also sought help for his son’s job search on LinkedIn, acknowledging the challenges faced by young individuals in securing their initial employment opportunities.
Born in Austin, Texas, James was adopted at a young age by Mr. Keeping and his wife Christine, excelling academically with A-levels in politics, economics, and drama. He later graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in marketing and management in 2024.
His father mentioned that James had a tendency to become fixated on certain interests, including air pistols and their modifications, which were believed to be linked to the tragic event. Despite previously holding a shotgun license as a member of a shooting club, James relinquished it after being diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and anxiety.
On the day before his demise, James spent time with his girlfriend, Lesha Jennings, discussing his feelings until the early hours of the morning. The following day, after dropping Lesha off at her home, James became upset and frustrated about his unemployment status.
Lesha described James’ deteriorating mental state, noting his negative outlook on life and the challenges he was facing. Toxicology reports revealed a high level of alcohol in his system at the time of death, leading the coroner to deliver a narrative verdict due to insufficient evidence to determine his intentions.
