“Mother Brutally Attacked by Daughter and Son-in-Law”

A woman and her spouse viciously assaulted her mother in her residence by breaking down the door to her apartment. The 56-year-old victim was left injured, bleeding, and had to crawl for assistance following the violent incident. She endured kicks to the head and was pulled by her hair during the assault carried out by her daughter and son-in-law.

Paula and Malcolm McGill caused severe injuries to Kirsty Barrie, 56, resulting in a brain hemorrhage after forcibly entering her flat in Clydebank on May 6, 2024. The couple has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

According to reports, the High Court in Glasgow disclosed that the mother and her 41-year-old daughter had been estranged and had not communicated for approximately seven years, despite residing in proximity to each other.

In the early morning hours, police responded to a noise complaint at a neighboring unit of the perpetrators. Authorities visited the McGills’ door, where Paula McGill denied hearing any disturbances, and they left the scene.

Shortly after, Miss Barrie heard a buzz at her door and found her daughter and son-in-law outside. Despite her refusal to grant them entry, Malcolm McGill forcefully kicked open her front door.

Prosecutors stated that both attackers entered the premises, causing Miss Barrie to be in a state of shock. Paula McGill verbally assaulted her mother before physically dragging her to the ground, inflicting multiple kicks to her face and head.

Malcolm McGill also participated by stomping on Miss Barrie’s ribs, causing her to feel them “crunching.” The assault, as per Miss Barrie’s account, lasted no longer than half a minute.

Following the attack, the McGills fled the location but were captured on a doorbell camera leaving the scene. The injured victim managed to crawl to her bedroom, where a neighbor found her and alerted the authorities. She was transported to the hospital by the police due to the unavailability of ambulances.

She sustained severe injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, nose and rib fractures, a collapsed lung, extensive bruising, and a laceration to her lip. Medical professionals determined that her injuries necessitated ongoing treatment and specialized care.

Upon her discharge from the hospital on May 12, 2024, the McGills were arrested. Paula initially denied involvement in the assault, claiming she was at a friend’s residence, while Malcolm refused to comment. However, forensic evidence linked both individuals to the crime, including blood traces on Malcolm McGill’s footwear.

The pair pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Barrie, causing severe harm, permanent impairment, and endangering her life. The judge, Lord Mulholland, reduced their custodial sentences to four and a half years each due to their guilty pleas. Additionally, he imposed a lifelong non-harassment order prohibiting them from contacting or approaching Miss Barrie, with a warning that breaching the order is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment.
