Nigel Farage kicked off his campaign for the Clacton by-election by addressing a sparsely attended right-wing conference in London, a considerable distance from the constituency he aims to represent. Speaking to a crowd that included Tory and Reform UK MPs, as well as staunch right-wing supporters, Farage expressed his willingness to take risks, describing himself as someone who enjoys a gamble.
The event, CPAC GB, was modeled after a prominent American pro-Donald Trump convention and was organized by former Tory Prime Minister Liz Truss. Despite drawing the largest audience of the day, the 500-seat auditorium had plenty of vacant seats available.
During his speech, Farage confirmed his candidacy for the Clacton by-election, highlighting the lack of participation from major parties. He addressed the scrutiny he faced regarding a substantial gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, dismissing it as a coordinated attack aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
Painting a grim picture of societal decline, Farage lamented what he perceived as a deteriorating state of affairs in Britain. He warned of a potential future where the country could regress to third-world status, citing concerns such as the reluctance of people to wear watches or jewelry in fear of theft.
Taking shots at Andy Burnham and Kemi Badenoch, Farage criticized the Labour leader for lacking a mandate to become Prime Minister and called for an immediate general election. He accused Burnham of steering the country further left without a clear mandate from the electorate.
Farage also targeted the Conservative leader, questioning the alignment of Kemi Badenoch’s values with the actions of the previous Conservative government. He expressed his view that the past Conservative administration’s actions were unforgivable.
Facing competition from various candidates in the upcoming by-election, including Count Binface, Laurence Fox, Howling Laud Hope, and Piers Corbyn, Farage highlighted the challenges posed by the establishment against his Reform party. He accused opponents of resorting to unfair tactics in their attempts to undermine Reform’s credibility.
The Clacton by-election will feature a diverse array of candidates, with notable figures such as reality TV contestants and independent candidates vying for the vacant seat. Major political parties like Labour, the Conservative Party, Liberal Democrats, and the Green Party opted not to field candidates for this election.
