Nigel Farage is poised to engage in a by-election battle with comedic candidate Count Binface this summer. Farage, the Reform party leader, recently resigned as the MP for Clacton amidst criticism for his failed attempt to trigger an August contest. The move was seen as a desperate ploy to divert attention from a scandal involving a £5 million donation.
With major political candidates opting out, Farage is expected to face off against fringe contenders, including Count Binface, a self-proclaimed “intergalactic space warrior.” Keir Starmer criticized Farage, labeling his by-election plan as a dead-end, exposing him as a fraud.
TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak described Farage’s actions as a “pathetic political stunt,” emphasizing that he should face consequences. Farage’s resignation from the Commons triggered a process where MPs are appointed to symbolic roles by the Treasury, preventing them from returning to Parliament.
Despite criticism, Farage’s party announced plans for a by-election on August 6, while Labour sources suggested a later date. Farage’s resignation halted an investigation into his undisclosed £5 million gift, pending the outcome of the upcoming election.
Count Binface, a satirical candidate, acknowledged his slim chances of winning in Clacton, where Farage previously held a significant majority. Elections expert Sir John Curtice predicted a lackluster turnout for the by-election, as major parties opted out of the race.
Farage defended himself on GB News, expressing frustration at being portrayed unfairly. He vowed to seek validation from the public, aiming to challenge the establishment’s narrative.
