Son Accused of Neglect in Mother’s Death

A man has been accused of leaving his mother unattended in her bathroom for two weeks, resulting in her tragic death in Carlisle, Cumbria. Veronica Irwin, 72, passed away in what was described as a distressing and cruel manner due to neglect.

The court was informed that Stewart Irwin, 56, finally contacted emergency services after finding his mother unwilling to get up following a fall. Paramedics arrived at the scene to discover the elderly woman unclothed from the waist up, with maggots present on her body, raising concerns that she had already passed away.

The jury at Carlisle Crown Court learned from a post-mortem examination that Veronica Irwin succumbed to hypothermia and sepsis due to pressure ulcers, a result of being left on the floor for an extended period. Prosecutors emphasized that Irwin displayed a lack of care by not seeking medical assistance for his mother, despite her deteriorating condition.

Allegations were made that Irwin not only neglected his mother’s well-being but also took money from her bank account and was frequently observed on CCTV purchasing alcohol at a nearby store. The prosecution argued that his actions were far from those of a responsible caregiver, as he continued with his routine while his mother languished in dire circumstances.

The trial is ongoing, with the prosecution highlighting Irwin’s apparent disregard for his mother’s welfare and the gravity of the situation.
