“England Braces for Thunderstorms: Lightning, Heavy Rain Expected”

England is set to experience thunderstorms with frequent lightning strikes and heavy rain affecting various regions.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office, effective until 9 pm today.

The Met Office forecast indicates that thunderstorms moving eastward will bring lightning, gusty winds, torrential rain, and potential hail in some areas.

While the storms will move swiftly, limiting widespread heavy rainfall, localized areas might see 20-25 mm of rain in a short time, possibly leading to brief flooding.

Although lightning strikes and hail could cause damage to buildings, power cuts, and driving difficulties in heavy rain, the main impacts are expected from these hazards.

Additionally, an amber warning for extreme heat is in place. The thunderstorm warning covers parts of East England, London, South East England, and South West England.

According to the Met Office, possible damage to buildings and structures from lightning or hail is anticipated. Driving conditions may be affected by spray, standing water, or hail, potentially causing longer travel times by car or bus.

Further impacts could include train service delays and short-term power outages. Residents are advised to assess the risk of flash flooding in their area and take necessary precautions.

The Met Office recommends seeking shelter in a safe enclosed space, such as a car, upon hearing thunder and avoiding trees or structures that may attract lightning. Individuals on elevated areas should move to lower ground and stay vigilant for rapid weather changes.
